Proprietary vs Open IP Telephony FAQ
How does Open Source telephony compare to proprietary solutions from companies such as Cisco, Avaya, Nortel, and Toshiba?

Is Open Source cheaper?

Yes! Only with an Open Source IP telephony system such as Druid OSE do you get a PBX starting price of $0. Even with commercial Open Source PBX systems such as Druid UCS you are still looking at costs significantly less than those of proprietary systems.

Do I lose features going with Open Source?

Not at all. In fact, you gain flexibility. With a proprietary system you are limited to the phones provided by that vendor. Implementing a Cisco business telephony solution requires you to replace your entire network with Cisco switches and wireless networking. With Open Source PBX solution such as Druid UCS you can work with any IP phone systems you want - Cisco, Linksys, Polycom, Snom, Aastra, Grandstream and many others. You also have access to a wide variety of specialized systems such as Polycom conferencing phones, Aastra portable SIP DECT phones that provide a clear audio signal up to 300,000 square feet, and CyberData IP loudspeakers for paging across loud warehouses.
