Security issues are very important when you consider VoIP telephony. While traditional digital and analog telephony technologies were very secure, VoIP, using the public Internet, is extremely unsecure unless you take proper steps to protect your system.
Druid UCS 5 introduced the concept of Users that are separate from extensions. This allows you to have a comlex and therefore very secure extension pin number used to register your SIP devices such as your VoIP telephones and have a separate possibly more human readable password that allows your users to control the basic aspects of their extension. If an intruder were to figure out the user password, this would have limited impact, while if they discover the extension pin they have the ability to use your services to make potentially costly phone calls.
To further increase security, Sollos recommends all SIP traffic be restricted to VPN tunnels such as over PPTP and IPsec connections.
