Perpendicular Drives
The next advance in hard drive storage will be Perpendicular hard drives. These drives are not much different than current drives, except their magnetic encoding is done perpendicular instead of longitudinally resulting in smaller bit sizes. This in turn results in more compact storage capacities for drives of all sizes. Laptop drives will increase in capacity as will iPod drives and full size desktop drives will grow to 1TB. Expect these drives to begin shipping by mid-year 2006.
