Apple has shipped Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, the latest version of the Mac OS. New features in Mountain Lion include:

  • Versions - automatic versioning of your documents on all support applications
  • iCloud - Mountain Lion integrates with iCloud allowing you to save documents directly to your iCloud account from iWork, Text Edit and other applications.
  • Sharing - Mountain Lion provides new sharing buttons throughout the OS for sharing files via Email, iMessage, Twitter and Facebook.
  • Reminders - The Reminders app from iOS has made its way to OS X 10.8, replacing the To Do list that was within iCal previously. Add reminders on your Mac and see them automatically on your iPhone!
  • Notes - The new Notes app is also taken from the iOS app of the same name. Sync your notes across all your devices.
  • Airplay - Share your OS X screen to your AppleTV, just like you can share videos from your iPhone and iPad.
  • Full Disk Encryption - No more does File Vault limit itself to a user folder and incompatibility with Time Machine. You can now encrypt your entire hard drive
  • Multi-touch gestures - Mountain Lion has new ways to navigate your system taking cues from your iOS devices
  • Full-Screen Apps - Mountain Lion provides the ability to run applications full screen to avoid distractions and take complete advantage of the available screen area
  • Mission Control - Mountain Lion bundles Dashboard, Exposé and Spaces into a single interface that gives you a full overview of what is happening on your system
  • Mac App Store - Introduced with Snow Leopard earlier in 2011, the App Store is now integral and the preferred method of purchasing software for your Mac
  • Launchpad - Learning from the iOS interface, Launchpad shows all available applications on your Mac on a grid, just like your iPhone or iPad making it easy to find and organize in folders
  • Resume - Applications that have been updated to support Mountain Lion can now resume where you left off. You no longer have to save as they are automatically saved all the time. When you quit and relaunch or even restart your Mac, starting the app up once again will bring you to the same place you left off
  • AirDrop - a quick and easy way to transfer files between Mountain Lion computers. Simple and fast
  • Mail - Apple Mail has been dramatically improved to make better use of screen real estate, conversations shows your messages in an optimized intuitive view, search suggestions and search tokens help you find information faster
  • Mountain Lion Server - Mountain Lion Server is now an additional download that can be added to any copy of Lion
