Convergence of the Teens

On the verge of 2010, what can we look forward to in technology for the coming decade? In a word, convergence.

Bandwidth has increased and we are already delivering HD quality video of high speed Cable, Fibre and even ADSL networks with the help of the impressive H.264 and similar codecs. This technology will steer television further into yet another IP based media delivered to us through Hulu, iTunes and similar services.

Far more compelling will be the wireless Internet space. Overlooking marketing terms like 4G, we can see the first really exciting wireless broadband coming to market late in 2010 with LTE. These technologies will provide fast and intelligent wireless broadband that will eventually cover the country at least as well as our existing cellular networks if not better. Not only will we see true broadband performance on a mobile network, but voice traffic will run over these wireless IP network bringing us to an eventual IP conversion of the legacy phone system. Once completed you will no longer be tied to carriers for your phone service but will have wireless broadband providers compete for your business by providing the fast most reliable service with the best voice and video quality.

The leaders in this will be Apple and Google. Apple with its Mac OS X derived platforms such as iPhone OS and AppleTV and Google with their Android and ChromeOS platforms.
