Apple ships Mac OS X 10.6 PDF Print E-mail

Apple has shipped Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. This upgrade of Mac OS X is priced at $29 for the client version and $499 for the Unlimited Server edition. Mac OS X 10.6 looks much the same as Mac OS X 10.5 with few major new features. The goal of this release was to improve the stability and performance of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Mac OS X 10.6 will take up significantly less hard disk space on your Mac and almost every application will run faster due to these optimizations. 64 bit support is once again expanded in this release helping Safari outperform itself running on Tiger or Leopard. The Finder has received major attention in this release and will feel tighter and faster as a result. Snow Leopard is designed to make major use of the fast OpenCL video cards shipped in all recent Macs, potentially improving performance of some functions by a factor of ten. In addition, Snow Leopard is designed to seriously take advantage of the multi-core and multi-processor Macs that cover all but the very earliest of Intel Mac minis. Speed and stablity are the primary goals of this release.

However there are some feature improvements such as full Exchange support within Mac Mail, Address Book and iCal. Apple now offers better support for Microsoft Exchange than Microsoft Entourage for Mac users. All these applications have also been updated to take full advantage of Mac OS X 10.6 Server which provides the same functionality of Exchange for far less the cost.

Mac OS X Server 10.6

As mentioned, Mac OS X Server 10.6 has the functionality of Microsoft Exchange without the charge per user that can drive the cost of Exchange quite high. The new Mac OS X Server 10.6 has improvements across the board with a faster more robust mail server, improved web server features, a new version of Podcast Producer and much more making this the most exciting Enterprise-grade server product Apple has ever released.
