Apple has announced they will be releasing Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard in 2009. As the name suggests, this update will not be dramatically different from the current Mac OS X 10.5 in that it will not have many new features added, but will instead focusing on stability and performance. Apple has added functionality to Snow Leopard to ease the process of writing applications that fully take advantage of multiple cores as well as the power of fast video cards. Additionally, Snow Leopard can address up to 16TB of memory. Additional features include support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 and a new version of QuickTime that promises optimized delivery of video and audio media streams. This is a very welcome announcement from Apple. Producing a modern operating system is extremely complex as can be seen from the poor adoption of Windows Vista and the repeated suggestions by this email list for our clients to delay upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard until it can better stabilize. It is possible that Apple will be dropping support for more computers when Snow Leopard is released. |
