Welcome to the Technical Manual for Druid UCS 5.3. This document will discuss installation of your Druid UCS along with provisioning hardware and VoIP trunks, advanced configuration topics and troubleshooting.

Preinstallation Planning

When preparing your business for a new Druid UCS system you need to consider your requirements and the best networking and hardware configuration to meet your needs reliably and providing the opportunity for growth at your company.

Here are some points to consider when preparing your network and choosing hardware for your Druid UCS server:

  • Consider using a VLAN switch with PoE
  • Use a firewall that prioritizes VoIP traffic and understands VLANs
  • Install effective power protection on your entire network with quality UPS systems
  • Your Druid UCS Server should have 2GB of memory and preferably Dual Cores
  • Consider using Raid 1 Mirroring in your Druid UCS server
  • Choose a Server-grade system that is certified for Red Hat Enterprise 5.2

Just as important a consideration is your Broadband and telecommunications. Please consider the following points depending your availability, cost and your particular requirements:

For SIP trunking:

  • Choose a Broadband provider that offer your SIP trunking bundled with their service and includes Quality of Service on your voice traffic
  • If you cannot receive SIP trunking with QoS from your Broadband provider, consider installing a second Broadband connection dedicated to voice traffic
  • If you will require fax support, consider going with a PRI or adding analog lines to your system for fax support
  • If you will be utilizing Conferencing on Druid UCS, you should install a TDM hardware card in your Druid UCS server as a high resolution time source

For TDM:

  • Always install Digium or Sangoma cards that include hardware echo cancellation
  • Properly ground and protect your lines against power surges

IP Phones

Druid UCS supports any SIP phones available. In addition, Druid UCS includes richer support for phones from Snom, Polycom, Aastra, Cisco, Grandstream, Linksys and Mitel.  Many model phones from these companies will be autoprovisioned by Druid including flashing the phone to the latest supported firmware and downloading user settings automatically. Finally, Druid UCS provides the most complete support for Aasta 675x series IP phones including the 6753i, 6755i, 6757i, and the 6757i CT. Druid UCS provides a graphical interface to control the programmable keys on each Aastra phone you deploy.
